Yesterday afternoon, the Loser's mob, incited by him, stormed and ransacked the Capitol in Washington, D.C., while Congress was in joint session to count and certify the electoral votes. Members had to be evacuated or hidden in the building.

Very briefly for the record: Last Sunday, August 23, Jacob Blake, a Black man in Kenosha, WI, was shot in the back seven times at point-blank range by officer Rusten Sheskey after an as yet unknown altercation and attempt to arrest him, while he was leaning into his car where three of his children waited and got their dad shot before their eyes. Protests broke out. White vigilantes appeared, and one of them, 17-year-old Kyle Rittenhouse, killed two people with his assault rifle before walking calmly toward the police lines where he was not arrested, nor shot in the back, but received a matter-of-fact welcome. (There is, again, extensive video footage. A day or so later, Rittenhouse was arrested for first-degree homicide in his home in Illinois; the officer is on 'administrative leave'.)

I've written about democracy and freedom, so I should perhaps complete the trilogy and add a few words about justice and the law:

• Law enforcement in the United States is violent, vengeful, and inefficient.
• War against crime produces more of it.
• The death penalty is barbaric.
  So is the habit of making prisons as hellish as possible.
  So is trying children as adults.
  And so is making the penal system a private industry.
• The US has the world's highest incarceration rate.
• 'Qualified immunity' for law enforcement officers amounts to putting law enforcement outside the law.
• District attorneys and lawyers making 'deals' outside of a court room is appalling. People are made to admit to an offense they did not commit for fear of being tried for an even worse offense the district attorney will level against them before a jury. This is wrong whichever way you turn it: if the defendant is guilty of the greater offense, he partly gets away with it, if he isn't he will be sentenced innocently.
• 'Winning' a criminal case has nothing whatsoever to do with justice.

Democracy in America - 185 years after Tocqueville:

• Gerrymandering: Representatives get to pick their constituents instead of vice versa.
• The Electoral College has repeatedly invalidated the popular vote in presidential elections.
• Non-automatic voter registration offers many possibilities to restrict access.
• Requirements to disclose party affiliation with registration violate voters' privacy. In Ohio, for instance, the complete voting record of a person is available on the internet (but you can't talk about politics at a party because that's too personal).
• Selectively closing polling places offers obvious possibilities to exclude voters.
• Purging voter rolls using unreliable data has resulted in denying voting rights to many eligible voters.
• Depriving convicted felons of their right to vote is undemocratic.
• Voting on a regular work day (Tuesday) is a serious restriction for many working people.
• #45 alleges mail-in voting is fraudulent - even though he uses it himself and even though it is a necessity in pandemic times. So he's trying to ruin US postal services by withholding federal funding.

The cure is hydroxycloroquine.

Wearing a mask is reasonable and should be done even without explicit orders. Now some Ultra Stupid Americans turned wearing a mask into a political (!) statement:

I am not wearing a mask. Masks are for socialist wimps. I'm not afraid of this Chinese virus. This is a free country. You can't tell me what to do. It's called freedom and liberty. And the President isn't wearing a mask, so I am not either.

Or so the argument goes.

Indeed, the president fears he might look ridiculous with a mask. Some of us think he looks ridiculous even without one. But be that as it may. The point here is that not wearing a mask gives you a sense of freedom. You're not to be told what to do; you insist on being an inividual with individual rights.
You think freedom is rebellion, whereas free cooperation possibly appears to you as blind obedience.

Your underlying feeling, though, that your rights have been taken away is correct. You are clinging to what's left, like wearing a gun rather than a mask. Other than that, you are paying the taxes so the rich don't have to; you live from paycheck to paycheck and if anything happens you lose your house, your car, your job; your insurance company tells you what they will cover in case you're sick; if you don't have insurance you're free to die anyway; many of you can't afford college for their kids; and in California - the fifth-largest economy on earth!- people are waiting in the summer heat for seven hours to get a box of groceries from the food bank...

...And NO, this is not normal! It is not the way a rich and civilized country works. It is not the way a free country works. They tell you it's worse elsewhere. No, it is not. Not in Europe, not in Canada, not in Japan, for example.

So, if you make it an issue of your individual freedom to defy reason and to help that virus to spread by not wearing a mask, then you are like a child who has his fairy-tale view of the world and, as mentioned above, thinks that freedom is rebellion, and has no notion of adult free cooperation. (On this video you can watch children between the ages of 5 and 15 who look like adults but aren't. Then again, all of this might just be abysmal stupidity.)

Today, the US had 50,000 new Corona cases, record numbers the fifth day in a row. The economy isn't doing too well, the president is a gangster, law enforcement isn't working because officers don't know what to do and walk off the job when they're asked to stop killing people. The Lt.Governor of Texas, being the complete idiot that he is, tells the media he is "done listening to Dr. Fauci"; the Florida Governor, intellectually challenged to the same degree, thinks masks are less important than opening bars and restaurants to the virus.

Stupidity (or childishness) got us into this mess. Will it get us out?

In 2014, Eric Garner, NYC, was killed by officer Daniel Pantaleo who locked him in a chokehold until he suffocated. Pantaleo was fired in 2019 (!) but never brought to court.

In 2016, Philando Castile, St.Paul, MN, was killed by officer Jeronimo Yanez who fired seven rounds at close range into the victim's car and was acquitted of all charges.

A few days ago (2020-05-25), George Floyd, Minneapolis, MN, was killed by an as yet unnamed officer who throttled him to death by pressing his knee into the side of the prostrate victim's neck for more than seven minutes. Bystanders repeatedly told the officer to desist. Three other officers were involved in the incident. All four were fired (but the way things are, they will probably never be convicted).

There is video footage of all three killings and/or the time immediately thereafter.

Between January 2011 and December 2019 a total of 3768 suspects were killed by law enforcement officers in the United States (that is about 11.4 per million population or 377 per year).

Canada (same time span): 97, (about 2.55 per million; 9.7 per year);
UK (same time span): 20, (about 0.29 per million; 2 per year)
Germany (same time span): 79 (about 0.96 per million; 7.9 per year)

Update 2020-05-30:

There have been violent protests, arson, looting, in Minneapolis and other cities for several nights now. The usual counter-violence. Understandable and completely futile. Just savagery against savagery.

And the officials once again extend their laments and condolences to the victim's family and offer prayers.

Also, those same officials cannot deliver a single press conference without mentioning that the whole world is somehow affected and the whole world is watching.

We, the world, are watching because parts of the United States are a fucking freak show. The Freak-in-chief resorts to 1960's Jim Crow language and tweets "When the looting starts, the shooting starts".
And what do you know: a black CNN reporter gets arrested by State Troopers while he is on the air. Now, that's a "fuck you" to the black community if I ever saw one.

On May 29, the investigating special agent and the prosecuting attorney filed a statement of probable cause against ex-officer Derek Chauvin that is so crappy they didn't even get the victim's name right (referring to him as Mr. Lloyd twice). It seems, though, as if Chauvin had his knee on Mr. Floyd's neck for eight minutes and forty-six seconds, Floyd being unresponsive for almost three minutes at the end of that time.
- Do a little experiment: find out how long 8:46 is!

Chauvin was subsequently arrested and charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter. He had 17 complaints on his record already, including fatally shooting one suspect and involvement in the killing of another. A good officer, apparently. Nothing, by the way, about the other three: Tou Thao, J. Alexander Kueng, and Thomas Lane.

The county medical examiner performed an autopsy, detected "no physical findings that support a diagnosis of traumatic asphyxiation or strangulation", and came to the conclusion that "the combined effects of Mr. Floyd being restrained by the police, his underlying health conditions and any potential intoxicants in his system likely contributed to his death".
Potential intoxicants, there you go. Has this examiner ever heard of the carotid sinus, its function and how it reacts to pressure? And isn't it curious that Floyd was perfectly alive with his underlying health conditions and his potential intoxicants until a cop put a knee to his neck for almost nine minutes? And could someone throw an old man off a cliff who then dies of old age and a certain amount of impact on the ground below?

(Ah, yes, before I forget: The Liar-in-chief threatened to close down Twitter for adding a cautionary note to his lies about mail-in ballots. Twitter slapped him a second time for inciting violence in the abovementioned looting-shooting-tweet. He proclaims to be the best president the US ever had while the Corona death toll soars past 100,000 due to his early negligence. He still upholds that the virus will simply go away. And he thinks playing golf is a suitable way to express his compassion which, of course, goes to show that he has none whatsoever.)

Speaking of compassion and the complete lack thereof:

Peaceful protesters in front of the White House were violently cleared out with tear gas and rubber bullets so he could walk across the street to a photo-op at St.John's Episcopal Church in front of which he posed holding up a bible.

Bishop Mariann Budde (among other church officials) was livid:

Let me be clear, the President just used a Bible, the most sacred text of the Judeo-Christian tradition, and one of the churches of my diocese, without permission, as a backdrop for a message antithetical to the teachings of Jesus.

Prior to that, he had apparently been escorted to hunker in his bunker for a while, so now he had to do something grand and manly as could be expected from a delinquent brat.
In the same direction goes his threat to deploy the US-Army against protesters if the governors are too "weak" and "look like a bunch of jerks".
And since not enough praise and glory was forthcoming, he played with himself a bit on Twitter:

A couple of hours before these events, arch-conservative columnist George Will had written:

This unraveling presidency began with the Crybaby-in-Chief banging his spoon on his highchair tray to protest a photograph - a photograph - showing that his inauguration crowd the day before had been smaller than the one four years previous. Since then, this weak person's idea of a strong person, this chest-pounding advertisement of his own gnawing insecurities, this low-rent Lear raging on his Twitter-heath has proven that the phrase malignant buffoon is not an oxymoron.

The measures necessary for restoration of national equilibrium are many and will be protracted far beyond his removal. One such measure must be the removal of those in Congress who, unlike the sycophantic mediocrities who cosset him in the White House, will not disappear "magically," as Eric Trump said the coronavirus would. Voters must dispatch his congressional enablers, especially the senators who still gambol around his ankles with a canine hunger for petting.

Now, back to the murder of George Floyd.

A final autopsy report was published by the county medical examiner. Mr. Floyd's family had requested a second, independent autopsy which - in flat contradiction to the abovementioned complaint (statement of probable cause) - came to the conclusion that asphyxia by prolonged pressure to the neck was indeed the cause of death: "There is evidence in this case of mechanical or traumatic asphyxia". They also determined that Mr. Floyd was in good health otherwise. Shortly after (!) this report the county medical examiner concurred that the death of Mr. Floyd was a homicide.

The charges against Derek Chauvin were upgraded to second-degree murder and the other three officers Thao, Kueng, and Lane, were arrested and charged with aiding and abetting second-degree murder which has the same penal consequences as the murder itself.

Do I believe they will be convicted? Not until it happens.

Update 2020-06-06:

That new wall around the White House seems to be coming along just great. (Perhaps a sign could be added on the outside: Closed Psychiatric Ward. No Visitors!)

Two police officers in Buffalo, NY, pushed a 75-year-old man to the ground and left him there in serious condition, bleeding profusely from a head wound. One officer was held back trying to help him. There were at least two dozen officers present. Finally, someone in military fatigues stooped to look after the man. The two officers were suspended without pay and subsequently the other 57 officers of the 'Emergency Response Team' resigned from that team in support of them.

American police officers are at war with the people they are supposed 'to protect and to serve'. It is extremely unlikely that all of them are simply assholes. So, what is wrong? My guess is: wrong training, wrong orders; and - more than a guess - the systemic violence that has been a defining characteristic of this country from its beginning, combined with a speechlessness that would sooner hit than talk - of which the twitler-in-chief is a prime example, given that his English is inferior to that of an average high school dropout.

Update: 2020-06-08:

As mentioned above, police seem to be at war with people and have been militarized over the past decades. And since the press is covering police violence against protesters extensively, the dramatic increase of severe attacks on journalists shouldn't come as a surprise.
When I wrote that not all officers are assholes, I did not mean to exclude that there might be more than just a few bad apples in the basket - which seems to be the case. Additionally, #45's continuing allegation that the free press is the "enemy of the people" might bolster the idea in those benighted officers that they are actually working for the people.
Very spooky. Like someone said: History is not one damn thing after another, it's the same damn thing over and over.

Two days ago he reversed the 2014 restrictions on landmines for the American Forces, thus withdrawing from another treaty signed by over 100 nations.

In the middle of his senate impeachment trial, he and Bibi Netanyahu (who was formally indicted for bribery and corruption just hours before) presented their "Deal Of The Century" regarding a Palestinian state, peace, and prosperity in the region:

• Jerusalem shall be "Israels undivided capital".
• The capital of the Palestinian state shall be East Jerusalem. (??)
• No Israelis or Palestinians shall be uprooted.
• The independent Palestinian state shall be "contiguous" by way of a long tunnel (!) between Gazah and the West Bank.
• The "Deal" will "more than double Palestinian territory": a few patches of desert will be added to it along the Egyptian border.
• Israel shall have full sovereignty of the Golan Heights, the Jordan Valley, and the settlements on the West Bank. They shall also have sovereignty over the airspace above all of the two states.

• Palestinian leaders were not involved in any way.

NWS (National Weather Service) said otherwise, but he presented a doctored map in the Oval Office showing him to be right... Then - brace yourselves! - NOAA (National Atmospheric and Oceanographic Agency) issued a statement backing him against their own NWS.

Future weather reports (and possibly all other scientific communications) should include a caveat: "Subject to presidential approval".

The creep-in-chief is a symptom, not a cause. One aspect of the causes might be this:

Marshae Jones was five months pregnant when another woman, Ebony Jemison, shot her in the stomach, in an Alabama town called Pleasant Grove. The 27-year-old Jones survived but the foetus, hit by the bullet, did not. Jemison successfully pleaded self-defence, since her gun was drawn in the middle of a fight that Jones reportedly started and was winning - according to an unnamed police source - until the gun was fired.

Subsequently Ms. Jones (!) was indicted for manslaughter of her unborn child. In Alabama, a fetus is a person and the argument was that she had intentionally caused the death of her unborn child by initiating a fight.

In other words, if you shoot and kill a person that did not attack you but happened to be inside another person who did, you go free because you still acted in self defense. If, on the other hand, you put a (fetal) person in a situation where it might be killed, you are guilty of manslaughter. Alabama women should be advised not to do anything that might endanger their unborn babies such as "intentionally" driving a car or taking out the heavy garbage. What about a woman who is subjected to domestic violence during pregnancy? And if Ms. Jones goes to prison, her 6-year-old daughter will be deprived of her right to have a mom.

The general idea seems to be that the unborn 'person' is protected, but once you're born you're fucked.

And where he quotes James Mattis (Sec. of Defense) as calling him "unhinged" and "an idiot", John Kelly (Chief of Staff): "[he] has the understanding of a fifth- or sixth-grader", and John Dowd (his ex-lawyer) calling him "a fucking liar" and advising him against testifying before Robert Muller, because he would be unable not to perjure himself, and thus would end up in an "orange jump suit".
(There is a telefone conversation between Woodward and the pResident Evil which is a Must-Listen! Especially the part where he throws Kellyanne Conway under the bus without missing a beat.)

A couple days later, an anonymous Op-Ed appeared in the NY Times in which a "senior official in the Trump administration" writes:
• "The root of the problem is the president's amorality" […]
• "President Trumps impulses are generally anti-trade and anti-democratic."
• "The president's leadership style […] is impetuous, adversarial, petty, and ineffective."
• "[…] he engages in repetitive rants, and his impulsiveness results in half-baked, ill-informed and occasionally reckless decisions that have to be walked back."

Now #45 desperately wants to know who wrote that, and ordered Jeff Sessions and the FBI to find out. Except that in a democracy the DOJ and the FBI are not to be used to crack down on an anonymous writer or political adversary. For that you'd need something like the SA or the Gestapo. Kim Jong-Un and Putin could possibly help him out with the details.

Obama socked it to him, finally!, in a speech given at the U of Illinois yesterday. #45 retaliated immediately at a rally in Fargo, ND, where he also took two shots at pronouncing the word "anonymous" and failed both times.

At a rally in Montana, a day earlier, a high school student in a plaid shirt stood right behind him in full view of the camera, and, having made a few astonished and slightly skeptical faces, was replaced by a good-looking and properly enthusiastic girl. Somebody in one of the shadier corners of the web calls himself "Q", claims that he has the highest security clearance and provides "breadcrumbs" (enigmatic clues) to the "bakers" (the growing community of people that are to bake a cake out of the crumbs, I suppose). The U.S. is just the place for something like that to gain momentum. And so it does. They have their own lingo, their own symbols, and their motto seems to be "WWG1WGA" (Where we go one, we go all).

"Q Anon" is not exactly a conspiracy theory, but a salvation theory: And the Savior is #45 who is a determined and cunning genius fighting for the Good. His overt insane behavior is a camouflage to distract his enemies (therefore this overt behavior does not matter, and he can do whatever he wants). Underneath however, he - here comes the conspiracy - is fighting a heroic battle against the "deep state", against the enemy "MSM" (main stream media), and against a huge underground pedophile sex trafficking ring headed by Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, and George Soros. Simultaneously, Vladimir Putin fights against the Illuminati and the Jewish bankers' satanic cult.

Soon someone is going to find out that 45's middle name is not John after all. It is Jesus. And he came back under a disguise to distract the devil. And there will be Armageddon. Any day now.

As long as something is being built, especially after a devastation like WWII, people have little fear. Everything prospers, and even circumstances like the Cold War do not create the amount of fear they should.
Act 2:
Once relative wealth is established, naturally the fear of losing it grows. We are afraid of our wealth being taken away by 'terrorists', immigrants, refugees, or even our trade partners. And indeed, it is being taken away, but not by them. It is taken away by the 10% who now become wealthier at the expense of the 90%. They take entire countries hostage (Greece, for example, and most of Africa). So the fear does have a basis: many lose their jobs, their homes, their savings to the greed of a few. Inadvertently, a letter has crept into the word democracy. Only an iota. But it turns democracy into deimocracy: the reign of fear. Then...
Act 3:
... a leader appears, usually some sort of reckless gangster, telling people that he understands their fear and has a solution for it. And since fear incapacitates thinking, they are glad someone offers a solution that their fear-befuddled minds can grasp. The solution involves getting rid of 'terrorists', immigrants, refugees, trade partners. It also involves suspension of some basic values that gave life meaning. Now there is no life, only survival. Or so the gangsters would tell them.
Act 4:
The measures taken by the gangsters are detrimental to public wealth and welfare. More is being taken away from people. The fear becomes more acute, and more acute the faith in the gangster. Eventually disaster strikes. Then we are back to Act 1. And so on. How many more times?

Net neutrality is about equal access to the internet for everyone. Nothing may be blocked or slowed down that you would ordinarily have unhindered access to. Now the FCC shitcanned that. ISPs (Internet Service Providers) are free to do whatever they want as far as their services are concerned. Ajit Pai, head of the FCC and handpicked by #45, undid President Obama's 2015 regulations.

Pai's position is that the internet thrived prior to these regulations, therefore they are an obstacle to further development.

This kind of cynical lying should be made a federal offense.
The truth is that the internet worked and thrived because there was net neutrality, and the regulations were put in place because it was being threatened by large ISPs and other companies.

The NY Times writes: "He [Pai] said the rollback of the rules would eventually benefit consumers because broadband providers like AT&T and Comcast could offer them a wider variety of service options."

The person who came forward immediately with details about a minor incident was - Garrison Keillor himself. Minnesota Public Radio (MPR), having become famous because of Keillor, fired him on the spot: all contracts terminated, no rebroadcasts of the show, show gets a name change. The Washington Post followed suit and cancelled his weekly column. (Their motto is "Democracy Dies In Darkness". Is there any trace of due process in all this?! No, there isn't. And that is what gets my goat. Two weeks have passed now and still no word of an ongoing investigation. None whatsoever. This is a disgrace.

It seems that this president's main goal is to undo each and every act of his predecessor who had granted children of illegal immigrants, having arrived in the US with their parents, a renewable right to stay in the country under the DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) program. Most of them are as American as apple pie by now, they pay taxes and some of them serve(d) in the military, but Attorney Degenerate Jefferson Beauregard Sessions III says they are taking away American jobs.

Europe should urgently recall their scientists lest they take away American research positions.

To top it off, #45 says he loves the Dreamers and passes the buck to Congress to come up with a solution in six months, or else…

He does not understand how NATO works, hence he thinks they owe "large sums" to the U.S. and lectures to the other NATO leaders as if they were unruly school children. Likewise he does not know how trade works and calls the Germans "bad, very bad". The reason: "Look at the millions of cars they sell in the U.S. Horrible. We're going to stop that."
True, there are (almost) no Chevrolets in Europe, but he does not recognize the many Fords and Opels, and he does not acknowledge that BMW, Daimler, and VW have large production facilities in the United States. A Bloomberg commentator lists the various blunders of this trip and concludes:

Many of those who think they could still win, will in the end fall prey to the vilest scumbags on the planet: They will give their last dollars to psychopathic evangelical cocksuckers like Mike Murdock (or the late Gene Scott and many others) for the promise that by the grace of God it shall return to them hundredfold, which, of course, it never does. Police Departments who buy themselves costly toys from the money stolen via Civil Forfeiture. Municipal fines that get outsourced to private firms for collection so that the citizen pays 10 or 50 times the amount of his original parking ticket. And then there are payday loans, subprime mortgages, or Steve Mnuchin's "forecloure machine". Vultures! Rats! The last companions of the dreamer. And if it should happen that you are arrested for driving on an expired licence or urinating in public or some such minor misdemeanor, you are fucked. The U.S. has the world's highest per capita incarceration rate, and American prisons are institutions of vengeance and brutal retaliation, not of resocialization. Because 'losers' are worthless. The word "worth" has to be followed by a number: he is worth 10 million. A loser is worth zero.
